Hands-on science experiments. Designing Devices

Xraise provides design-based, student-centered learning opportunities that allow students to connect their existing science knowledge to real-world challenges. These activities encourage students to integrate their own ideas, utilize feedback from direct experiences, and modify their designs based upon experimentation. Xraise integrates scientific processes with engineering practices.

With an emphasis on three main areas of STEM employed at our synchrotron laboratory—electricity and magnetism, light and waves, and engineering design—Xraise facilitates these direct experiences. We present students with a problem to solve and the freedom to imagine, create and rapidly prototype a solution. Our approach yields high gains in science interest, especially in elementary grades, but it also models the problem-solving and collaborative learning that takes place in a world-class institution.
